Hi Teacher~ 정명진입니다. Happy new year~! 새해가 밝았습니다! 이제 곧 한국의 New year’s day인 설날도 다가올 텐데요. 그래서 오늘은 설날의 다양한 풍습들에 대해 영어로 공부해보려고 해요. 전화기와 이어폰만 있으면 오케이!!! 필리핀 현지로 GO! GO!

Jung Good morning, Teacher Mark! I was looking forward to seeing you again! (좋은 아침이에요 마크선생님. 선생님 만날 날만 기다리고 있었어요.)
Mark Good morning, Mr. Jung! I am happy to see you as well! How are you? (좋은 아침이에요 정군. 저도 정군 만나서 정말 기쁘답니다. 어떻게 지냈어요?)

Jung I feel fantastic! How about you? (아주 잘 지냈죠! 선생님은요?)
Mark I feel great! Thank you for asking! Hmm… Mr. Jung! Today, we are going to discuss about New Year’s Day. (나도요, 물어봐줘서 고마워요. 오늘은 새해에 대해서 얘기해보려고 해요. )

Jung Yes, right! (맞아요)
Mark Can you tell me the things you usually do on New Year’s Day? (설날에 뭐 하는지 말해줄 수 있나요?)
Jung Teacher Mark, do you know tteokguk? (떡국 아세요?)
Mark tteokguk, tteokguk ,tteokguk ? What is that? (떡국…. 그게 뭐예요?)
Jung Oh Not is SSukguk. anyway Mark.. what about yunnuri? (쑥국이 아니고요. 그럼 윷놀이는요?)
Mark Yunnuri..tteokguk? What are these? Please tell me. (윷놀이, 떡국. 그게 뭐예요? 말해줘요)

Jung In New Year’s Day, whole family is come. And we eat tteokguk, it’s the rice cake soup. The meaning of eating tteokguk is we have one year plus. We get one year older. We play Yunnuri. We bow down to our parents and then we greet them sae he bok mani baduseyo. After that we say ‘sae he bok mani baduseyo’ to them. (설날에는 온 가족이 모여요. 그리고 떡국을 먹죠, 떡국은 떡이 들어간 국물이에요. 떡국을 먹으면 한 살을 더 먹는다는 의미가 있죠. 새해에는 한 살 더 늘어나잖아요. 그리고 윷놀이를 해요. 그리고 나서 새해 복 많이세요 라고 말을 해요)

Jung Oh. Speaking of which, what’s in the Philippines? (필리핀에서 어떻게 다른데요?)

Mark Well, in the Philippines, we only celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1st. It is a family celebration. All family members will try their best to go home for that holiday. Also, we prepare a lot of delicious food. Example would be “Pancit”. Do you remember Teacher John showed you Pancit in your class before? (음, 필리핀에서는 1월 1일에 새해 명절을 지내요. 가족들이 다 같이 축하하는 날이죠. 연휴를 맞이해서 가족들이 다 모인답니다. 그리고 맛있는pancit을 준비하죠. 존 선생님이 예전에 pancit을 보여준 거 기억하나요?)

Jung Oh pancit! It was delicious pancit! (아 pancit이요! pancit 정말 맛있었어요.)
Mark Anyway that is how we celebrate New Year here in the Philippines.(어쨌든 저도 좋아해요. 필리핀에서는 이렇게 새해를 축하한답니다.)

Jung Oh, I see! A Different culture but gathering of families is the same. (그렇군요. 조금 다르지만 그래도 가족들이 다 모인다는 건 같네요)
